MITIGATION BANKING

Mitigation banking helps offset environmental impacts from development projects by preserving, enhancing, restoring or creating a wetland, stream or aquatic area in a nearby area. The goal is to replace the function and value of ecological habitats that might be adversely affected by a large-scale projects like housing developments and industrial expansion.

Mitigation banking earns mitigation credits, which are then sold to a developer for a fee. Mitigation banks are regulated and approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Mitigation banking provides many benefits to our communities:

  • Protects the environment
  • Streamlines conservation in the region
  • Assigns responsibility for developing, maintaining and monitoring the site
  • Supports economic growth
